New School Building--Design and Construction
After many wonderful years housed in the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia and Agudas Achim Congregation, Gesher has moved to its new, state-of-the-art facility, designed to meet the academic mission of our community day school. In 2002, Gesher purchased a beautiful 28-acre property on Shirley Gate Road in Fairfax. Gesher was granted a Special Exception, in accordance with Fairfax County zoning requirements, that allows for the development of a school and camp on the property. The nearly $14 million project has been divided into two phases: Phase I will accommodate 350 students. In the future, Gesher plans to grow the school to its maximum zoned capacity of 540 students. It is anticipated that a facility of approximately 47,000 square feet can meet the needs of our Phase I population. In addition to our new school building, Gesher will have a large suburban campus, partially wooded and partially developed, for playgrounds, ball fields and other athletic facilities--a perfect place for young children to learn, thrive and grow! Anchored by a breath-taking Jerusalem-inspired wall, this modern building will house a stunning library, a technology center, a gymnasium, stage, cafeteria, kitchen, science center and classrooms designed to meet our small group learning approach. The cornerstone of the design is the Beit Midrash, a round, light-filled space for T'fillot and Judaic learning. The design, by the architecture firm of Walton, Madden, Cooper, Robinson and Poness, seeks to connect to the land of Israel with the front facade that mimics the color and feel of Jerusalem. We encourage you to visit the new school! |
