Teaching and Learning
Gesher’s mission is to prepare its students to become knowledgeable and committed Jews, informed and responsible American citizens living in a pluralistic society, and morally sensitive human beings. Our educational program is dedicated to academic excellence and creative expression in both general and Judaic studies. Gesher promotes the intellectual, social, physical, and spiritual growth of each student by responding to individual learning styles, abilities and potential, in a caring, supportive and structured environment.
Our General Studies program includes the basic disciplines of math, science, computer skills, language arts, social studies, art, music, physical education, and library science. Central to our day school is a commitment to developing a love of Judaism in our students and their families. The celebration of Shabbat and the Jewish holidays, as well as daily prayer, shapes our school calendar. Participation in all religious activities is open to boys and girls, and Kashrut is observed throughout the school. The children are involved in social justice projects, and the giving of tzedakah is emphasized. We seek to encourage and enhance the various levels of and approaches to observance within each of our families.
Our educational priorities are articulated through the values which we demonstrate on a daily basis:
- To inspire students to become life-long learners, learning for the sake of learning, in a comprehensive dual curriculum.
- To provide an environment that is safe, nurturing and challenging.
- To enable each child to develop a foundation of cultural and Jewish literacy.
- To encourage our students’ communication and self-expression in writing, speech, prayer, drama, music and visual arts.
- To integrate Judaic and general studies in lessons and programs.
- To promote ethical behavior, in and out of school, as taught by our traditions through the study and observance of Mitzvot.
Gesher is proud to offer small class size, typically limited to 16 students, with an average student-to-teacher ratio of 9:1. This affords us the luxury of individualized attention and special programs for our students, and helps us to maintain Gesher's warm, nurturing atmosphere. Both our teachers and our parent body enjoy the flexible, supportive, and student-centered learning environment of Gesher.
“Curriculum Highlights” is a regular publication of Gesher. It is available from the Admissions office.
