Summer is here and it is time to relax, refresh and read. It is also a great time to review the math skills your children have learned over the year. Numerous studies have shown that children who do not review mathematical concepts tend to lose their understanding of the information.
Gesher offers a summer math refresher program online. The program is offered by the Jefferson Lab and is aligned with the Virginia State Standards of Learning. Students going into grades 3-8 must complete at least 100 questions at their grade level or one grade level above if they are in the enriched class. Students who completed Algebra in the seventh grade must complete the Algebra questions.
The students must complete questions in groups of 5 or 10. Once they start a session, they must complete the session to receive a score. Students are highly encouraged to complete the item sets periodically throughout the summer as opposed to all at one time. Students may complete a maximum of 10 problems per day. When students have answered a question, they receive immediate feedback and may also receive instructions on how to complete the problem correctly. The problems are given randomly and each item set will give the students a different set of problems.
Students must correctly answer 80% of the problems before sending the scores (at least 4 out of 5 or 8 out of 10). When a student has completed a session and scored at least 80% correct, they should send the results via email to Jack England at jengland@gesher-jds.org. Student’s results will be kept as reported.
This program is mandatory and completing the program will help students retain important mathematical skills. When a student has completed at least 100 questions and has answered at least 85 questions correctly, they will be given an A as their first test score during the first quarter of the 2012-13 academic year. If you have any questions, please contact Jack England.
