After School Sports

After School Athletics Program

Gesher’s after-school athletics program offers our students the chance to learn new or enhance existing skills in specific team sports. The goal of the program is to teach students the value of working as a team while ensuring that they also appreciate the benefits that consistent practice affords. Any student in grades 5-8 in good academic standing is welcome to register for any of our team sports. We welcome everyone from beginners to experienced athletes.

Students learn that in addition to providing proper exercise, physical conditioning, and skill-building, team sports also equip them with the tools necessary to navigate life: persistence, patience, empathy, and respect.

Currently, we offer soccer in the fall and basketball in the winter. These programs focus on building fundamental skills while improving their knowledge and understanding of the strategies and nuances of each sport. These teams work as a unit to overcome adversity, and always strive to be graceful achievers.

Gesher’s after-school athletics program is a member of the ABC Athletic League of Greater Washington competing against seven other independent schools.

Members of the ABC Athletic League include::

  • Alexandria Country Day School
  • Browne Academy
  • Burgundy Farm Country Day School
  • Capitol Hill Day School
  • Edlin School
  • Green Hedges

Girls on the Run

Additionally, Girls on the Run is usually offered in the spring. “Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a 10 week program designed for girls in 3-5th grade, starting in mid-March. Girls on the Run is more than running – it is designed to develop important strategies and skills to help girls navigate life experiences. The curriculum inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms, build confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique. At the end we’ll participate in a Girls on the Run 5k event (very hopeful we can do this in person at Gesher in May). This celebratory, non-competitive event is the culminating experience of the curriculum.”
